Natural latex foam is derived from the hevea brasiliensis tree which offers a naturally occurring source of rubber. This material is then whipped and vacuumed into a mold, and then heated to create the Talalay foam used in our mattresses. The resulting foam is thouroughly washed and in this state does pose a threat to those with latex sensitivities. The difference between Dunlop and Talalay latex is a common question, as people want to know what foam will be best for them. The difference in the two lies in how they are manufactured. In the Dunlop process, latex liquid is poured into a mold then vulcanized, or heated, and washed. Talalay latex mattresses are made by whipping latex with elemental binders, pouring it into a mold, vacuum sealing and flash freezing the chamber to create homogeneous foam, which is then vulcanized and washed. The result is Dunlop latex feels more dense and may be less uniform, while a Talalay latex mattress will feel more resilient and uniform. Typically, Talalay latex is considered higher quality and is more customizable in terms of firmness.
